The original night stand as it were, before indoor flushing came to be, they were called commodes. They were
chamber pots that would sit by the side of the bed at night in case one needed to get up and use the commode. They
would have door on the bottom that would hold the pot itself. Through the years they have come a long way and are
now called bedroom night stands that sit next to a bed.
Bedroom night stands today serve a few different purposes. One of the best does not have to get up to turn off
the light when one is ready to go to sleep. You can have a small lamp on the night stands and be done with getting
up all the time. When you are ready to buy them, first decide what kind you want. There are a large variety of
materials and styles along with prices that you can choose from.
Bedroom night stands offer balance to the bedroom. The basic bedroom has a bed, a dresser or two. If one would
look at a bedroom that has no night stands, it will look like something is missing. This is where the bedroom night
stands come into play. Many bedroom sets today come with two bedroom night stands, although some will be extra.
When buying bedroom night stands for the first time, decide first on what you want them to do, other than making
the bedroom look nice. If you eat in bed, get them that have a pull out shelf. Or if you like to read, there are
ones that have a mini bookshelf. Most have one drawer on top for odds and ends one must have close at hand.
If there is already a bed and you want to add to the bedroom, get the bedroom night stands that fit the
furniture. If the bed is small, buy two small night stands, or if it is oversized, get the oversized bedroom night
stands. You want them to blend in the bedroom, not stand out.
Bedroom night stands are made of many different types of materials. Many prefer solid wood; others will go for
the lighter ones, usually made of compressed wood. This type is very inexpensive and can last for many years. But
if one wants solid wood, take your pick. They are made of timber either from trunks of the trees, such as mahogany,
oak or pine it is graded and then cut to make night stands.
Other woods that make up bedroom night stands are Asian hardwoods. These are judged to be ecologically friendly.
These trees are used to produce rubber for approximately thirty years or so and then cured and treated, it is made
into furniture. Asian hardwood is just as strong as any other type of wood. Usually called rubber wood just the
front of the drawers would be made of this wood. The legs, top and sides are made of composite wood. So whichever
type or style you want bedroom night stands are a must in any bedroom.
